Si chiamavano Battista e Paolo Antonio Ugo. Erano nativi di Vinadio. Battista vide la luce il 21 giugno 1876, Paolo il 28 giugno 1887. Battista era alto 265 centimetri e pesava oltre 200 chili, Paolo era più basso di poco. Mangiavano mezza dozzina di uova alla volta e bevevano in boccali da mezzo litro. Avevano bisogno di abiti e scarpe fatti su misura. Battista, quando andava a scuola, non poteva sedersi nei banchi come gli altri suoi compagni e doveva usare il tronco adattato di un castagno. Da ragazzo poteva portare da solo sulle sue spalle un carro pesante 400 chili e passeggiando sotto i portici di Cuneo era costretto a camminare curvo per non battere la testa. Si accendeva un sigaro sfregando il fiammifero sui balconi posti a tre metri da terra.  I documenti riportano un’altezza di 2,65 m, un peso di 200 kg, lunghezza braccia 2,37 m, lunghezza piede cm. 45, polpaccio cm. 50. Nel 1891 Battista fu mandato a lavorare come boscaiolo, in Francia. Lì venne notato dal proprietario di un circo itinerante che gli propose di unirsi al carrozzone. Battista accettò. Il suo nome e le sue origini furono francesizzati: diventò Baptiste Hugo. Un calzolaio di Cuneo gli chiese uno dei suoi stivali, con suola di 42×17 centimetri, da esporre nella vetrina della sua bottega. Alcuni suoi famigliari, fieri di questo parente così strano da essere addirittura diventato famoso, aprirono a Pratolungo la Trattoria del Gigante, di cui oggi rimane soltanto l’insegna sbiadita dal tempo.  Nel 1905 Paolo decise di unirsi a Battista. Insieme i due fratelli, ribattezzati Géants des Alpes, Giganti delle Alpi, furoreggiarono in Europa Il sogno si interruppe il 15 febbraio 1914, quando Paolo morì a soli 26 anni dopo una breve malattia.  Battista, andò in America per entrare a far parte nientemeno che del Circo Barnum&Bailey di New York.  «Vi mando un bacio da la Merica (America) sono in buona salute lavoro sempre e vi saluto tutti. Battista». È l’ultima missiva inviata a casa. Morì il 23 aprile 1916 all’ospedale Willard Parker di Manhattan. “Muore gigante del circo: soffriva di nostalgia di casa”, con questa frase ne annuncia la morte il New York Times del 24 aprile 1916. Le ragioni del decesso non furono del tutto chiarite. C’è chi afferma che il corpo del gigante sia scomparso perché preso dagli indiani. Don Michele Marchisio, parroco a Vinadio, nel 1959 annota su un registro: «Tanto interesse, tanta fama, tanta curiosità, tanto splendore di un tempo si chiuse nell’ombra di una morte misteriosa e trova oggi l’ombra dell’oblio».

In 1891 Battista was sent to work as a lumberjack in France. There he was noticed by the owner of a traveling circus who proposed that he join the bandwagon. Battista accepted. His name and origins were Frenchized: he became Baptiste Hugo. A shoemaker from Cuneo asked him for one of his boots, with a 42x17 centimeter sole, to display in the window of his shop. Some of his family, proud of this relative so strange that he even became famous, opened the Trattoria del Gigante in Pratolungo, of which today only the sign faded by time remains.  In 1905 Paolo decided to join Battista. Together the two brothers, renamed Géants des Alpes, Giants of the Alps, became all the rage in Europe. The dream was interrupted on 15 February 1914, when Paolo died at just 26 years old after a brief illness.  Baptist, he went to America to join none other than the Barnum & Bailey Circus in New York.  «I send you a kiss from America (America), I am in good health, I always work and I greet you all. Baptist." It is the last letter sent home. He died on April 23, 1916 at Willard Parker Hospital in Manhattan. “Circus giant dies: he suffered from homesickness”, with this sentence the New York Times announced his death on April 24, 1916. The reasons for his death were not entirely clarified. There are those who claim that the giant's body disappeared because it was taken by the Indians. Lorsque Battista allait à l'école, il ne pouvait pas s'asseoir aux pupitres comme ses autres camarades de classe et devait utiliser le tronc adapté d'un châtaignier. Enfant, il pouvait porter seul une charrette de 400 kilos sur ses épaules et, en marchant sous les arcades de Cuneo, il était obligé de marcher courbé pour ne pas se cogner la tête. Un cigare a été allumé en frappant une allumette sur les balcons situés à trois mètres du sol.  Les documents font état d'une hauteur de 2,65 m, d'un poids de 200 kg, d'une longueur de bras de 2,37 m, d'une longueur de pied de cm. 45, veau cm. 50. En 1891, Battista fut envoyé travailler comme bûcheron en France. Là, il est remarqué par le propriétaire d'un cirque ambulant qui lui propose de rejoindre le train en marche. Battista a accepté. Son nom et ses origines sont francisés : il devient Baptiste Hugo. Un cordonnier de Cuneo lui a demandé une de ses bottes, avec une semelle de 42x17 centimètres, pour l'exposer dans la vitrine de son magasin. Certains membres de sa famille, fiers de ce parent si étrange qu'il est même devenu célèbre, ont ouvert à Pratolungo la Trattoria del Gigante, dont il ne reste aujourd'hui que l'enseigne effacée par le temps.  En 1905, Paolo décide de rejoindre Battista. Ensemble, les deux frères, rebaptisés Géants des Alpes, font fureur en Europe. Le rêve s'interrompt le 15 février 1914, lorsque Paolo décède à seulement 26 ans des suites d'une brève maladie.  Baptiste, il part en Amérique pour rejoindre nul autre que le Barnum & Bailey Circus de New York.  «Je vous envoie un baiser d'Amérique (Amérique), je suis en bonne santé, je travaille toujours et je vous salue tous. Baptiste." C'est la dernière lettre envoyée à la maison. Il décède le 23 avril 1916 à l'hôpital Willard Parker de Manhattan. "Le géant du cirque meurt : il souffrait du mal du pays", par cette phrase le New York Times annonçait sa mort le 24 avril 1916. Les raisons de sa mort ne furent pas entièrement élucidées. Certains prétendent que le corps du géant a disparu parce qu'il a été pris par les Indiens. Se encendió un cigarro encendiendo una cerilla en los balcones situados a tres metros del suelo.  Los documentos muestran una altura de 2,65 m, un peso de 200 kg, una longitud de brazo de 2,37 m y una longitud de pie de cm. 45, pantorrilla cm. 50. En 1891, Battista fue enviado a trabajar como leñador a Francia. Allí fue descubierto por el dueño de un circo ambulante y le propuso sumarse al carro. Battista aceptó. Su nombre y sus orígenes fueron afrancesados: se convirtió en Baptiste Hugo. Un zapatero de Cuneo le pidió una de sus botas, con suela de 42x17 centímetros, para exponer en el escaparate de su tienda. Algunos miembros de su familia, orgullosos de este pariente tan extraño que incluso se hizo famoso, abrieron en Pratolungo la Trattoria del Gigante, de la que hoy sólo queda el cartel descolorido por el tiempo.  En 1905 Paolo decidió unirse a Battista. Juntos, los dos hermanos, rebautizados como Géants des Alpes, causaron furor en Europa. El sueño se vio interrumpido el 15 de febrero de 1914, cuando Paolo murió con sólo 26 años tras una breve enfermedad.  Bautista, se fue a Estados Unidos para unirse nada menos que al circo Barnum & Bailey de Nueva York.  «Les mando un beso desde América (América), estoy bien de salud, trabajo siempre y los saludo a todos. Bautista." Es la última carta enviada a casa. Murió el 23 de abril de 1916 en el Hospital Willard Parker de Manhattan. “Muere el gigante del circo: padecía nostalgia”, con esta frase el New York Times anunciaba su muerte el 24 de abril de 1916. Los motivos de su muerte no quedaron del todo aclarados. Hay quienes afirman que el cuerpo del gigante desapareció porque fue llevado por los indios. Don Michele Marchisio, párroco de Vinadio, anotó en un registro de 1959: «Tanto interés, tanta fama, tanta curiosidad, tanto esplendor del pasado se cerró a la sombra de una muerte misteriosa y hoy se encuentra en el sombra del olvido»..

Dort wurde er vom Besitzer eines Wanderzirkus bemerkt, der ihm vorschlug, sich dem Zug anzuschließen. Battista akzeptierte. Sein Name und seine Herkunft wurden französisch: Er wurde Baptiste Hugo. Ein Schuhmacher aus Cuneo bat ihn um einen seiner Stiefel mit einer 42x17 Zentimeter großen Sohle, um ihn im Schaufenster seines Ladens auszustellen. Einige Mitglieder seiner Familie waren stolz auf diesen so seltsamen Verwandten, dass er sogar berühmt wurde, und eröffneten die Trattoria del Gigante in Pratolungo, von der heute nur noch das mit der Zeit verblasste Schild übrig ist.  1905 beschloss Paolo, sich Battista anzuschließen. Gemeinsam erlangten die beiden Brüder, die in Géants des Alpes, „Riesen der Alpen“, umbenannt wurden, in Europa großen Anklang. Der Traum wurde am 15. Es ist der letzte Brief, der nach Hause geschickt wird. Er starb am 23. April 1916 im Willard Parker Hospital in Manhattan. „Der Zirkusriese stirbt: Er litt unter Heimweh“, mit diesem Satz verkündete die New York Times am 24. April 1916 seinen Tod. Die Gründe für seinen Tod waren nicht ganz geklärt. Es gibt Leute, die behaupten, dass der Körper des Riesen verschwunden sei, weil er von den Indianern geraubt wurde. Don Michele Marchisio, Pfarrer in Vinadio, notierte 1959 in einem Register: „So viel Interesse, so viel Ruhm, so viel Neugier, so viel Glanz der Vergangenheit wurde im Schatten eines mysteriösen Todes geschlossen und befindet sich heute in der Schatten des Vergessens»..
